A Steampunk Project Using a 1983 Honda Goldwing GL-1100cc.
The Theme - If Sherlock Holmes & Dr John H. Watson had a motorcycle, this would be it!
SITE UP-DATED: 20/10/2025 (Gallery Page new videos! & Tools Page!).

Welcome to my 1983 Honda Goldwing GL1100cc Steampunk project. I started in 2017 when I found the bike I have here. I've always wanted to build a Steampunk style motorcycle but I don't have the work space to actually weld, cut up & properly build a customized bike. So, I used the Goldwing GL1100cc but at the time I didn't have the idea of a theme. Luckily, it has an engine that lends itself to the look of the late 1880's when Sherlock & Watson first met, a good starting block for my project. For the first two years I had to work on all the things that were wrong with the bike: brakes, electrics & the like, plus the general running of the bike. Once I had a safe reliable runner I started my Steampunking!
~~~~~~~~~~ The Game Was Afoot!!! ~~~~~~~~
I think my experience of a kinda Steampunk style was first embedded in me as a kid, I remember my parents taking me to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang & Mary Poppins around 1967-ish, I was 7 years old. I loved all the gadgets, clothing, copper & brass specially on old Chitty. I think that's what first made me a bit of a nutty inventor, coming up with little inventions on my toys, go-kart's & push bikes. My Granddad was a great encouragement to me, he always said, "If you can see it in your head, you can make it!" I've always had stuff going on in there lol... So, after getting the bike on the go, I knew I wanted to Steampunk it. I then had the thought, "What if it I had a theme?
BATMAN has a bike! Why can't Sherlock Holmes!".
Once I had the theme I was on a roll. I had a direction & all the nutty professor inventor stuff built up in my head started flowing out... eBay became my new best friend! I spent many enjoyable Hours searching for copper & brass knickknacks for me to pick apart and turn into investigation tools for Sherlock Holmes & Doctor John H. Watson to use on their Private investigations & stake-outs. I've tried my best to make sure the stuff I've added to the bike doesn't look tacky or pointless. Everything has a use and everything has a reason for being there. However, I wanted there to be a tongue lodged firmly into the side of my cheek making loads of the equipment to be comical as you will see if you look through the equipment page on this website! Elementary my dear viewer, enjoy the nuttyness...
Moving forwards with the theme I thought about some of the stories & adventures written by "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle". I wanted to put references all over the bike, like a brass wolf's head referring to the adventure "The Hounds Of The Baskerevilles" & a number "4" on the right-hand side panel referring to the adventure "Sign Of The Four". If you look through the Adventures page on this website you will see references to all the stories I've covered including some modern adaptations & spin-offs you would find in books, films & Netflix i.e. "Enola Holmes 1 & 2" & the series "The Irregulars". There are a good few references, if you see the bike around you'll have to try and spot them!
If you have got this far, thank you very much for taking the time & for showing interest in a project that help maintain my sanity throughout the Covid lock-downs. I'd also like to thank God eBay was still running & vans kept delivering the tonnes of brass & copper knickknacks that allowed me to work away in my shed.
Whoohoo!
~ Ballade of Baker Street ~
I’ve followed many a devious way,
I’ve traveled fast & traveled far;
Beyond the night, across the day,
By many a mountain, lake & scar.
`Neath ilex, palm & deodar.
I’ve viewed the homes of Feme’s `elite;
Ah, why does frowning Fortune bar
Those hallowed rooms in Baker Street?
